Developing the World's First 3D Bioprinter: Invetech addresses the BioMelbourne Network

Peter Riddell & Chris Leigh-Lancaster Invetech's Peter Riddell and Chris Leigh-Lancaster.

Invetech's Peter Riddell and Chris Leigh-Lancaster will present the world's first 3D Bioprinter at the BioMelbourne Network Breakfast seminar next month.

In May 2009, San Diego-based regenerative medicine company Organovo turned to Invetech to help develop the world's first commercially viable 3D Bioprinter to print human tissues.

With low organ donation rates worldwide and organ rejection associated with transplantation, the 3D Bioprinter goes a long way to addressing these issues by taking the patient's own cells and making three dimensional organs on demand.

Peter and Chris will discuss the commercialisation of the 3D Bioprinter and whether the printer will be used for research on clinical applications. They will discuss the technical challenges in developing a flexible platform to enable different tissues to be made and how more complex organs can be manufactured.

In November 2011, Organovo and Invetech were recognised with the National Engineering Innovation Award for the 3D Bioprinter at the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards in Canberra.
